The Qualifications For Election Into The Federal Legislative House

Before a person can be qualified to contest for election into the federal legislative houses, there are some qualifications he or she must satisfy.

For election into the house of Senate, he must be a citizen of Nigeria and must have attained the age of 35 years.

For the House of Representatives, one must be a citizen of Nigeria and must have attained the age of 30 years.

Additionally, to qualify for election into either of the two legislative houses, one must have been educated at least up to school certificate level or its equivalent, and he must be a member of a political party and accordingly sponsored by the party.

See Section 65(1)(a)(b) and Section 65(2)(a)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
